Customizing the smallest Tech Deck: what actually fits

What the post doesn't give us is a parts list, a measurement, or which Tech Deck product line the board came from. So nothing below is a claim about what Jakepfb used. It's the checklist you'd run before trying the same thing with your own box of spares.

• Tech Deck is the mass-market line launched by X-Concepts around 1998 (that date comes from community history, not the brand) and acquired by Spin Master in January 2007, per Spin Master. It is the toy-aisle board most people started on.
• The dimensions of the smallest Tech Deck are not in the source material. Whatever is printed on the packaging, measure the deck you actually own before you buy anything for it.
• Aftermarket parts assume a 32–34 mm deck. Trucks, wheels, tape and bushings sold by the wider fingerboard market are scaled to that range. Nothing is manufactured to fit a novelty board, because there is no market for it.

Those three points are the whole brief. Everything else is a measuring exercise.

Two upgrades pay off on almost any plastic deck regardless of size, because neither one depends on a mounting pattern.

Tape. A strip of real riptape or foam cut to the board's outline changes the whole feel under two fingers. Stock plastic grip on toy-aisle boards is the single worst part of them. Cutting a smaller shape out of a sheet costs you offcuts, not money.

Wheels. Urethane instead of hard plastic changes what the board sounds like and how it leaves a surface. The catch is diameter: smaller deck, same wheel, and you're suddenly running wheels that look oversized and sit closer to the underside of the kicks. Check clearance before you commit.

Trucks and bushings are the real upgrade and the one most likely to be impossible. If the deck's mounting is molded pegs rather than screws, you are drilling thin plastic for a baseplate that was never designed to sit on it. If the hole spacing doesn't match your trucks' wheelbase, you're drilling anyway.

Scale, mostly — and scale is not a cosmetic problem.

Every obstacle you own is built against a 32–34 mm deck. A ledge edge, a rail, the coping on a quarter: all of it is proportioned to that width and to standard wheel diameter. Drop a sub-scale board into the same park and the obstacles are effectively bigger. A transition tuned to carry a normal deck out will carry a shorter wheelbase out differently, and a rail that locks a 33 mm board cleanly gives a narrow one far less to sit on.

Then there's the obvious one: your fingers don't scale down. A board narrower than your fingertips limits pop, flip control and where you can place a finger on a manual. That's not a parts problem and no amount of tuning fixes it.

Honestly: not much that's in front of us. The signal here is 46,687 views on a Short whose entire text is a question. There are no comments, build notes or parts in the source material to attribute to anyone, and inventing a consensus from a view count is how bad gear writing happens.

What the number does say is that the premise lands. A novelty-size board getting real parts is a format people watch — which is its own answer about why you'd do this.

Treat it as a bench project, not a setup. Tape it, put urethane on it if the clearance allows, and enjoy the twenty minutes. Don't buy trucks for it. Don't buy anything for it that you'd otherwise put toward a 32–34 mm complete, because the sub-scale board will not become a board you session — the obstacles in front of you are the wrong size for it and your fingers are the wrong size for it.

The caveat: if your particular smallest Tech Deck turns out to have screw mounting at a spacing close to a real truck's, the project gets a lot more interesting, and that's worth reporting back. The brand hasn't published those numbers anywhere in the material we have, so the only way to know is to measure one.
