Two months, two years, fifteen years: three deck makers on one podcast

The Bigspin Fingerboard Podcast is Christopher Vargas's interview show — FB.Christopher, a full-time fingerboard creator whose output also includes vlogs and The Chris Files. The podcast's usual shape is one brand founder or community figure at a time, talked through their own story. Stacking three guests at different distances from their first pressed deck is a deliberate departure from that format, and it is the thing that makes this episode worth flagging in the record rather than filing under "another maker interview".

At the time of writing the video had 2,625 views. That is a modest number against the scale of the scene, and it is also roughly the audience any given deck maker is actually talking to — the people who will notice a kick angle change between batches.

Going by the description, the conversation runs across two broad territories.

The first is the bench work: the actual process of making decks, plus tricks, techniques and tips, what works, what does not, and what each of the three has learned getting there. The description keeps that at the level of headline — it does not list which parts of the process come up, so I can't tell you from the text whether they get into mold shape, ply counts, glue, press time, sanding or shaping, or in what depth. Maker interviews in this scene almost always run brand-by-brand: here is the shop, here is the logo, here is the origin story. Sorting guests by time served instead changes what the questions can be. A maker two months in and a maker fifteen years in are not doing different jobs, but they are answering different questions, and the honest answers tend to be incompatible. The thing you do at two months because you have one press and no backlog is not the thing you do when a run has to come out consistent enough that a customer can order a second deck and get the same shape.

That is also why the host's caveat in the description is doing real work. He acknowledges there are hundreds, if not thousands, of deck makers in the community, each with their own way of doing things, and that nobody will agree with all of it. A panel format could easily flatten into one maker's method presented as the method. Saying out loud in the description that it isn't is the difference between a tutorial and a document.

Most of what fingerboard deck makers know is unwritten. It lives in Discord threads that scroll out of reach, in DMs between two people who trust each other, in a batch that came out wrong and taught somebody something they never posted about. The craft has grown enormously — enough that the host can plausibly say hundreds if not thousands of makers — without ever developing much of a published body of knowledge. There is no manual. There are veneer suppliers, a lot of improvised presses, and word of mouth.

That is what makes a recorded, long-form conversation between a two-month maker, a two-year maker and a fifteen-year maker useful beyond its view count. Fifteen years of pressing spans most of the period in which boutique wood went from a curiosity to the default expectation for a serious setup, and a maker who has been at the bench that long is carrying knowledge that otherwise only transfers one apprentice at a time. Two months is the other end of the same line: the stage where the community either absorbs a new maker or doesn't. Putting both in one file, with a two-year maker in between, is closer to an oral-history session than to a product interview, whether or not anyone involved framed it that way.
